DAY 5, 8 JUNE 2017 TRAVEL DAY Jarandilla de la Vera TO MERIDA

Great weather continues. Travel day today of about 187 K. We like to take smaller roads as you see so much more. We stopped in Trujillo, home of many a conquistador who left this very poor province of Extremadura to find fame and fortune in the New World. Pizarro, Orellana and Alarcon were brothers who conquered Peru and brought back great wealth. They built magnificent mansions but to this day it remains small and dusty with an old Arab fortress which is unrestored.
Temple Diana
We stopped at a small local bar for a Bitter Kas and to stretch our legs. I have to put in about the snack, it is what Paul always remembers! It was a delicious beef thingy made with paprika and olive oil. They make huge pot of this and then give you a little tapa with a few potatoes as a snack with your drink, whatever that is.
Merida was very hot and after changing into shorts we headed out to get our bearings. It is not as bad as Florida because it is very dry. 95F really seems like nothing! We kind of wandered around to the Temple of Diana and the Paseo de Eulalia where most of the shop are. We had arrived quite late and could not find anything substantial to eat. Good job we had a good breakfast at the Parador. Scrambled eggs with mushrooms and a crepe with all sorts of goodies filled the bill!
I told you we would have issues with this staying up late and sleeping late! Siesta was late too but absolutely essential with this heat. WiFi in the Parador was horrible and Reception shrugged their collective shoulders and said but it is okay here! We will deal with them tomorrow!
Plaza de Espana
Paul’s sandals were hurting his heel, so off we went to find a replacement. The guy in the shop looked at the size of his feet and sighed but he did find a pair that suited. Paul loves them, they are CallagHans, the best in Spain, made in Spain! Ole!
A plate of Serrano ham and cheese was all we needed for supper, that and beer and wine of course and we headed back to the Parador for a nightcap. It has been a long day, again. WiFi still  horrible. Strong RF signal but no internet……..tomorrow, just wait until tomorrow!
